Brian Garverick Hired To Lead Mansfield City Schools

There is a changing of the guard in the Mansfield City School District.

The board of education Tuesday hired Senior High School Principal Brian Garverick has the new superintendent effective July 1.

Garverick replaces Dan Freund who is retiring.

Garverick, 55, is a Mansfield native and 1976 graduate of Senior High. Garverick saidhe's ready for the job and looks forward to working with the board of education.

"I'm excited to be working with the board who has moved this district in an amazing way the last three years. It's all been in support of student achievement. I will continue working in the direction of student achievement and continue to support the programs we have in place,'Garverick said.

The board awarded Garverick a three-year contract with an annual salary of $112,000.

"I'm happy Mr. Garverick is going to be our next superintendent. I think he'll do well with the board's support helping him along the way we should continue to advance," board member Lowell Smith said.

"He's going to do what's best for the district. He's a Tyger. If things fall apart he's not going to leave. This is the job he wants to end his career with," board president Chris Elswick said.

Freund and Garverick will work together until he assumes his new position.

"Dan and I spoke almost everyday. Helet us run our ownbuildings and make our own decisions. Healways supported the staff. He was a great man to work with,"Garverick said.

Garverick said there will beno changes in the administration. He said this will be a fluid transition.

"We have a such a diversepopulation and great community.I've always loved Mansfield and the surrounding area. Education to me is not just a job but a lifestyle,"Garverick said.

Garverick served 18 years as a teacher and administrator in the Mansfield City Schools before leaving in 2008 for one-year to bcome principal at Norwalk High School.

He accepted the principal job at Senior High in 2009. During his tenure the high school was rated "effective" on the 2011 and 2012 Ohio Department of Education report cards.
