The Eastview Wastewater Treatment Plant on Fleming Falls Road in Mifflin Township will undergo improvements.

Richland County Wastewater Director Rick Freeman was given the commissioners' permission Tuesday morning to start design work on the $1.1-million project.

Freeman says it involves modifying the way sludge is processed so it's in a more dryer form, rather than the current liquid form, which is more expensive to truck to farm fields to be spread as fertilizer.

It will take until the end of the year for the designs to be completed and approved by the state, with the improvements to be done next year.

The cost will be paid from the county's sewer fund, so residents will not be assessed or charged an extra fee on their sewer bills.
