The Mansfield Mudhens are having a great summer season already, but will be looking for even more success in some big upcoming tournaments.

The under-13 squad recently won the Ohio state championship last Saturday, the second time this bunch has done so in the last 5 years. With an impressive 31-7 record and gaudy .399 team batting average, the Mudhens were invited to participate in an invite only tournament this weekend against some of the best U-13 teams in the country.

On the 4th of July the Mudhens will play the Indiana Nitro, a group rumored to be one of the three best in the U.S. Then on Saturday they will take on a team from Illinois that is 50-1 on the season and won the Disney Classic tournament earlier this summer.

June 18-21, the Mudhens will be in Gulf Shores, Alabama for the USSSA World Series, where again they will face some of the top competition from around the country. But despite what appears to be a daunting few weeks, players and coaches say they're not only excited, but confident about having the opportunity to play against some of the games best.

What makes the teams fortitude and achievements even more impressive is the fact the squad has just 10 players on the roster and they all come from around the Mansfield area. The roster consists of 2 players from Mansfield, 2 from Shelby, and one from Lexington, Clear Fork, Wooster, New London, Hillsdale and Plymouth.

Most of the team has been playing with eachother for the last five years, since they won the U-8 Ohio state title and are already excited about winning another one next summer. But assistant coach Doug Rickert says the ultimate goal is to put all 10 boys into college with a scholarship. The way these kids are playing, that goal doesn't seem too far fetched.
