The 80th annual News Journal Tennis Tournament kicked off this week, with junior events running through July 27. On Monday evening champions were crowned in the boys and girls 10-year-olds divisions, as well as the girls 12-year-olds division.

Pete Bombardier won the boys 10-year-olds title with a straight sets win over Thomas Secrist, 6-3, 6-2.

The girls 10-year-olds championship was claimed by Kaydence Hines, who won a 3-set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 over Alice Williams.

Hayleigh Tucker also needed a 3rd set tie-breaker to win the girls 12-year-olds final, taking down Abigail Emmons 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

The adult tournaments begin on July 28 and run through Aug 5. The men's tourney starts Aug 3, where defending champ Nicky Wong will attempt to retain his crown against what is expected to be a field comprised with more former champions than any tournament in the history of the event.
