The nearly four-mile stretch of U-S 30, from Fifth Avenue to State Route 309 through Mansfield, will be completely rebuilt.

Ohio Department of Transportation District Three Director Allen Biehl announced the major project during a news conference Thursday morning.

He says the highway, which dates back to the 1950's  can no longer be sustained with repairs.

So it will be rebuilt with a new foundation, and some of the exit and entrance ramps re-configured to modern standards.

Several bridges will also be replaced.

Mayor Tim Theaker says he's thrilled to hear of ODOT's plans for the heavily-traveled road.

He's especially pleased ODOT has agreed to pay for the entire $68-million project because Mansfield does not have money for matching funds.

The project is still being designed, with construction planned for 2016 or 2017.

ODOT hopes to complete work in one construction season, but it may have to be halted through the winter and resume in a second season.

At least one lane in each direction will be maintained.
