Under the command of head coach Scott Valentine, the Ashland football program has proven to be one of the most consistent in North Central Ohio year after year.

The teams 2012 campaign was no exception, as the Arrows finished with yet another winning season at 6-4. But Ashland very easily could have had a few more wins, with a chance to pull off victories in the closing minutes of practically every loss. Which is why the 2013 squad is working on the little things this offseason, in hopes that better fundamentals turn close losses into Arrow wins.

"You got to get the little things down as you progress or you're not going to become a better football team." Valentine says.

"We're trying to get fundamentally sound." Senior quarterback Nick Zurcher says. "Last season some things there, some things here could have went our way but didn't, but that's the game."

Zurcher will likely be the fourth different starting quarterback for Valentine in as many years when the season begins, but he believes Nick is the right signal caller.

"I think he's ready for his turn, so right now he's the guy." Valentine says.

And Zurcher is confident in his ability to run the Arrows complex spread offense.

"I've been working for the past four years with it." Zurcher says. "I've gotten to understand the offense and how it works. It's pretty basic once you understand all the concepts."

But quarterback isn't the only position left vacant by graduation this spring. Valentine will also have to fill other key positions, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

"Defensively we lost a lot of good players over onthat side of the ball." Valentine says. "We're trying to find guys right now and same offensively. Every year you got guys you're looking to find and hopefully you got guys that can fill."

The Arrows open the regular season on the road Aug 30 at Wadsworth.
