The 2012 season opened as many have come to expect in the Clear Fork valley, with two wins in the teams first three games. But once the conference portion of the schedule hit, the Colts struggled to win just one game in their last seven.

This year the squad has more speed and fire power than they had the previous season and feels the team's progression is ahead of schedule.

"I'd definitely say we're further ahead than last year." Head coach Dave Carroll says. "Number one because of the athletes we have. A lot more speed than what we had last year and athleticism."

Senior running back/linebacker Jordan Ridenour agrees.

"I think we're better than last year." Ridenour says. "We've got a lot more speed and the kids that should've been out last year are out now. We're a lot faster and I think we're ahead of last year."

To help prepare the Colts for the bigger schools that Clear Fork will face essentially every week in conference play, the team has been scrimmaging against heavyweight competition. Carroll says getting that kind of experience in the preseason has helped his kids understand what it will take to compete when the regular season rolls around.

"Playing faster, bigger, stronger teams that are going to bring it at you, when you see it for the first time it's a little bit of a shock." Carroll says. "But then it's like, this is the way it's going to be on Friday nights."

The Colts will get their last taste of competition with another opponent before the regular season this Friday in their preview with Marion Pleasant. Then the following Friday the games will start to count and Ridenour says we can expect to see maximum effort.

"We're just going to go out there and give it our all." Ridenour says. "Try our hardest to win as many games as we can. Our schedule's tough, it always is, but we're gonna do our best to win every one."

The Colts will open the regular season on the road with old rival Fredericktown. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. with highlights and analysis to follow at 11:30 on WMFD's Scores and More.
