Jonathan Nelson Delivers Powerful Performance

Stellar award winning and Karew Gospel Artist Jonathan Nelson performed a special concert over the weekend at Crossroads Community Church in Mansfield.

The chart topping singer, songwriter and worship leader electrified the audience with his amazing vocals. Nelson's songs have inspired and encouraged thousands of people across the nation.

Nelson said he's always been involved with gospel music. He said his father is a pastor and music has always played a major part of the ministry.

Nelson said before he became a songwriter he worked in corporate America.

"I felt like I was supposed to be in corporate America, but God has something different planned for my life so I transitioned out of corporate America," Nelson said.

"When my company downsized ,I loss my joband I discovered I had a gift for songwriting at that time. It came to me in my darkest hour and I started writing and expressing what was happening in my life," Nelson said.

With his group, Purpose, Nelson has released three albums since 2003. His top 10 smash hit "My Name is Victory" from his album "Right Now Praise," spent 65 weeks on Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart and won him a GMA Dove Aware nomination as Best New Artist of the Year.

Nelson said the title track,"Finish Strong," from his current CD, empowers people to never give up.

"I'm excited that I get to encourage people and to tell them whatever you started in your life maybe it didn't start well but you got to finish it and finish strong," Nelson said.

His song "Healed" recorded by his mentor gospel great Donald Lawrence earned him a Stellar Award for Songwriter of the Year in 1996.

Nelson said he listens to a variety of music and enjoys the different genres.

"I listen to everybody, jazz and even rhythm and blues Singers like Luther Vandross and Chaka Kahn have great background singing. There are also some great gospel artists like Walter Hawkins and Andre Crouch I also listen to," Nelson said.

Nelson also offers some advice to aspiring gospel artists and musicians.

"Have a solid foundation, have a great mentor and surround yourself around quality people that can help you sharpen your skills," Nelson said.

"I know what my assignment is, to empower, encourage and inspire people through the lyrics of my songs. If I'm able to put a smile on someone's face or have them think differently about their life in orderto gain a sense of , purpose then I fulfilled my assignment," Nelson said.
