Eagles Find Quarterback Of The Future

It's been a long, difficult search for Ashland University head football coach Lee Owens, but the Eagles general has finally made a decision on who will start under center.

 True freshman Austin Bruns has been named Ashland's starting quarterback to begin the programs 2013 campaign. The first time in Owen's coaching career he will start a first year player at the quarterback position.

"I've never played a true freshman quarterback at any level." Owens says. "We played a few freshman, a redshirt freshman. Charlie Frye was a redshirt freshman when he started for us (at Akron), but Austin's not your typical freshman."

The 6' 4", 210 lb Bruns started 45 games for the Cavaliers in high school, throwing for 8,502 yards and leading his team to a state championship a season ago. A big part of why Owen's felt he was ready for the job.

"He's like 8th or 9th all-time leading thrower in the history of Ohio high school football and his numbers last year were off the charts." Says Owens. "He's 100-percent quarterback all the time, so he's way ahead of the game in terms of being ready to play."

The 9th ranked Eagles will find out very early on in the season just how ready Bruns is to take over for All-American Taylor Housewright when Ashland opens on the road at 19th ranked Indianapolis. Ashland gave the Greyhound's one of just three losses the team would suffer last season, who finished with 10 wins and a playoff birth.

The Eagles will head to Indianapolis on Sep 7 for a 6:05 kickoff.
