Original Published: 9/2/2013 Former South African President Nelson Mandela is out of the hospital, according to the South African President's Office. He's expected to continue his recovery at his home in Johannesburg. Mandela had been in the hospital with a lung infection since June 8. Mandela was elected South Africa's first black president in 1994 and retired five years later after one term in office.
