Russia Courts Congress As Obama Arrives At G-20 Summit

  Original Published: 9/5/2013 The latest lobbyist to court lawmakers ion Capitol Hill is the Russian government. As President Barack Obama arrives at the G-20 summit in Saint Petersburg, Andrew Spencer reports lawmakers in Washington are getting requests to meet with Russian diplomats to talk about the crisis in Syria. On the eve of the G-20 Summit in St. Petersburg, news that House Speaker John Boehner refuses to meet with Russian diplomats. Russia says it will send a delegation to lobby U.S. lawmakers as they consider military action against Syria. They're expected sometime next week. The House Foreign Relations Committee tool up the White House's proposal on Wednesday. "What are the chances of escaltion? Are different scenarios accounted for? If our credibility is on the line now as is argued, what about of Assad retaliates? says Republican Rep. Ed Royce, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman. "We are talking about sending a clear message to the dictators in Tehran and Pyongyang that there will be serious consequences for floouting the will of the international community," says Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel of New York. At least one Congressman worried about getting too bogged down in the details. "Listening to some of my colleagues, it's been amazing to me that we are seeming to paralyze ourselves into inaction," says Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois. A Senate committee passed the proposal on a bote of 10-to-7, but the White House plan still has a long way to go. Thursday, President Barack Obama comes face-to-face with Russian President Vladamir Putin, who has now opened the possibility of backing a United Nations resolution, but only with what he calls irrefutable proof Syria's government used chemical weapons, which Putin openly doubts. The fleet of presidential jets started landing in Russia Wednesday, bringing world leaders in from each of the G-20 nations. President Obama is the late-comer to Constantine Palace Thursday, after stopping for meetings in Sweden ahead of the summit.
