Original Published: 9/6/2013 Parenting a teenager can be challenging, especially when dealing with disagreements. But new research shows that blowing up at your kids is not the answer. Holly Firfer has more in today's Health Minute. It's important to keep your cool when you're disciplining your teen, according to new research. "This study showed when parents frequently yell at or humiliate their kids, it's harmful to them," says Mark Crawford, a clinical psychologist. Researchers found when parents disciplined their teenagers by yelling, swearing at, or humiliating them, two or more times a week, the teens were more likely to act up in school, lie to parents, steal, fight or show signs of depression. The study looked at almost 1,000 two-parent families. "When their primary caretakers are yelling or humiliating them, it really causes them to question their own self-worth and their own identity," says Crawford. Parents usually yell because they take their child's behavior personally or they feel out of control. Let's face it, parenting a teen is not always easy. "You're going to be upset, that's just part of the job description, so what I think it's important for parents to know is, you have to self-soothe, you have to step away, get control of your own emotions," says Crawford. "Then decide what am I going to do? Do I need to discipline, or do I need to just have a conversation with them."
