Crestline To Hold Gates Brown Appreciation Night

  Original Published: 9/27/2013Gates Brown Appreciation Night will be held on Saturday October 5th at Shenanigans Pub, formerly the American Legion in Crestline. A dinner and silent auction will be held in honor of the Crestline native from 4 to 7pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. The dinner will offer both sit down and carry out. There is no cost, but a donation will be accepted. Brown has been in the hospital for the past several weeks with diabetes. It is hoped he will be able to attend if he receives his doctor's permission. Gates played for the Detroit Tigers from 1963-1975, signing his first pro contract in 1960. Was a member of the Tigers 1968 World Series championship team beating the Cardinals in seven. Batted .462 as a pinch hitter that season. First major league at bat, hit a home run out of Fenway Park. Holds AL record with 107 pinch hits, holds AL record with 16 pinch hit home runs. Holds MLB record with 74 RBI's while pinch hitting. Was batting coach of the Tigers from 1978-1984. Picked up another World Series ring in '84 when the Tigers beat San Diego in five. Of the many items to be auctioned, Pete Rose Rookie of the Year autographed baseball 1963, Pete Rose autographed MVP baseball 1973. Two encased baseballs signed by Nolan Ryan. Football signed by 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, football signed by Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh. Football signed by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
