Original Published: 10/15/2013Christine Hickman Box, author and Director of Operations of the Ashland County Historical Society, is excited about her new book. Hickman Box's new pictorial history book "Ashland" celebrates the rich history of the county through postcards. Seeking to preserve the past for future generations, Hickman Box, published her first book, Images of America: Ashland, in 2011. Treasuring the magnificence of an era gone by, she continues to pay tribute to the past by showcasing this assortment of nearly 200 postcards selected from the Ashland County Historical Society library and privately held collections. Celebrating its first 100 years in 1915, Ashland was proudly living in the golden years. It was during this time that postcards gained popularity, becoming the most common form of communication before the telephone gained prominence. Card photographers traveled the nation, snapping pictures of street scenes, local attractions, and citizens. In this visual history, readers will stroll through a town busting at the seams with industry, extraordinary homes, schools, and churches, becoming familiar with its streets, people, and landmarks. These cards are surviving reminders of a significant period that contributed to the story of Ashland, taken by those traveling photographers as they captured the golden years of the early 1900s.
