Original Published: 10/22/2013 In a city bordering Reno, Nevada, friends and family are remembering the teacher killed by a middle school student artmed with a handgun. Police believe the boy took that gun from his parents. Andrew Spencer has the latest on the shooting. Mike Landsberry was more than just a popular math teacher at Sparks Middle School. His brother says he was a former Marine, who served several tours in Afghanistan as a member of the Nevada Air National Guard. "He loved teaching at Sparks Middle School," says Reggie Landsberry, Mike Landsberry's brother. "He loved the kids. He was just a good all-around individual." According to one witness, Mike Landsberry tried to convince the student to put the gun down. Landsberry's brother says that sounds just like him. "The student who came in and did what he did, he probably tried to talk the kid down and protect whoever he could," says Reggie Landsberry. This exclusive video shows the playground where the student shot and killed Landsberry. He also shot two 12-year-old classmates, hitting one near the shoulder and the other in the belly. Both are expected to survive. Police believe the shooter took the handgun from his parents, a gun he later used to kill himself. A friend of the gunman told CNN she thinks she knows why. "I believe it was because I saw him getting bullied a couple of times," says Amaya Newton. "And I think he took out his bullying on, on him." But as people attended a vigil in Sparks, Nevada, police said it was too early to say whether the gunman targeted Mr. Landsberry and two classmates or if the shooting was indiscriminate.
