The Richland County Grand Jury has indicted a Mansfield man on charges of 20 counts of rape for allegedly raping a 14-year-old mentally impaired girl. The indictment was released Wednesday by the Richland County Prosecutor's Office. Richland County First Assistant Prosecutor Brent Robinson said David Stidham was indicted on charges of sexual battery (10 counts), Unlawful sexual conduct with a minor (10 counts), gross sexual imposition (2 counts) and attempted rape (4 counts). Robinson said the rape counts carry a sentence of 11 years for each count. Robinson said the alleged incidents occurred in July. "The incidents occurred while the teen was at her grandfather's house visiting. In this case the victim is the granddaughter of the defendant," Robinson said. "She reported that her grandfather had been touching her sexually inappropriately and an investigation was started by the Richland County Sheriff's Office," Robinson said. "There was also a report from a pharmacy that the defendant was with the teen picking out condoms. The clerk found that to be highly suspicious and called family members who investigated further. After talking with the victim she indicated she did not consent to the acts," Robinson said. Robinson said 10 of the rape counts allege force was used and the other 10 counts allege the teen did not consent to the acts because of impairment.
