The White House is pushing for young people to enroll in Obamacare. Ed Payne tells us what they're doing to motivate them and why the Obama administration says it's so important. The Obama administration wants young people to sign up for Obamacare. So now, in an effort to woo healthy young people, the White House is pushing a new study that shows nearly half of uninsured Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 can get health insurance plans for less than 50 bucks a month. "Ultimately, you need the young healthy people to be enrolled in order to keep the risk pool balanced and insure that you've got affordable premiums in the long run," says Caroline Pearson, a healthcare analyst. Without young people, premiums could spike, or worse, too many sick, costly patients would be enrolled and the system could fail. But what's the incentive for a young person to sign up? With a problem-plagued website, signing up online has been a headache, and for someone who is young and completely healthy, they may not feel the need to get insurance. But President Barack Obama thinks otherwise. He made his case in a recent interview on Fusion-TV. "I kind of remember when I was in my 20's, early 30's I thought I was invincible, but it turns out, I broke my nose playing basketball, turns out there were times when I had unexpected illnesses or accidents and making sure that you've got coverage insures that you're not paying out-of-pocket thousands of dollars that you may not have," he said. Although the exchanges need young people to function, many Americans will be paying a little more than the $50 the Obama administration is advertising. Plans differ, depending on where people live. In some cases, annual deductibles can be steep, and that means high out-of-pocket costs if they get sick.
