Galion Tigers senior quarterback and defensive halfback Dareian Watkins will not be playing in the Tigers OHSAA regional quarterfinal Friday at Kenton against the Wildcats. That according to Galion City Schools Superintendent Mark Stefanik. While Stefanik could not not say specifically why Watkins will not play, he only would comment that Galion must abide by Ohio High School Athletic Association rules. That means the Tigers will go up against one of the best teams in the state in Division IV without their best athlete. During the season Watkins accounted for 2,743 yards of offense both running and passing combining for 35 touchdowns. He also played defense in the secondary with 29 tackles and three interceptions. Watkins also returned punts and kickoffs and was the team's punter averaging nearly 41 yards a boot in 25 kicks. Last spring the senior made a verbal commitment to Northwestern of the Big Ten. Stefanik did say if the Tigers were to win, Watkins eligibility would be discussed next week.
