Tygers Football Playoff Run Ends

  Original Published: 11/16/2013The Mansfield Senior Tygers saw their football playoff run end Friday, at Olentangy Liberty in The Division II Region 5 semifinal as they fell to New Albany 26-22. The Tygers broke out on top at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter on a 40 yard touchdown pass from Jalen Reese to Chek Washington. Hutch Blackstone added the extra point and Mansfield led 7-0. New Albany responded at the 8:13 mark of the second period with a 45 yard touchdown run by Trey Quillin. Joey Rolwings extra point was good and the game was tied at seven. The Tygers regained the lead on their next drive at 5:59 before the half when Reese hit Mitch Nixon with a 10 yard pass for a touchdown. Blackstone's point after was good and Mansfield led 14-7. But with 1:50 to play before the break the Eagles Trey Quillin scored again from a yard out, but the point after was missed keeping the Tygers in front 14-13. But the lead would not last long. After a Tyger punt, the Eagles got to within field goal range with Rolwing converting from 40 yards out giving the Eagles the lead at the break 16-14. On the first play of the third quarter, New Albany's Trey Quillin broke off a 56 yard run that set up another Joey Rolwing field goal from 43 yards out making the score NA 19, MSH 14 with 10:22 left in the third. Mansfield would come back to take the lead with 1:44 remaining in the third quarter when Reese hit Washington with his second touchdown catch and with Senior High converting on a two point try the Tygers led 22-19. New Albany would close out the scoring taking the lead for good with 11:58 remaining in the game on a one yard run by quarterback Tanner Cline. The point after was good giving the Eagles a 26-22 lead that would wind up being the final score. Tyger quarterback Jalen Reese went 17 of 28 for 225 yards and three touchdowns, with Chek Washington catching six passes for 133 yards and two scores. But it was New Albany's defense that held the Tyger ground game to just five net yards, with Tyquan Vickers getting only 11 yards rushing. The Eagles on the other hand ran for 320 yards on the ground with Trey Quillin gaining 179 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Teammate Hayden George picked up 89 yards on 14 carries. In total yards the Tygers were outgained by New Albany 386 to 230. With the loss, Mansfield Senior ends their season as outright OCC champions and Division II regional semifinalists at 11-1, while New Albany moves on to the Division II, Region 5 final next Friday against Zanesville with a record of 11-1.
