It's still unclear why Major Dale Fortney is leaving the Richland County Sheriff's Office. But Sheriff Steve Sheldon offers some clarification. In a two-sentence news release, the sheriff now says Fortney has *effectively resigned* from his position. Sheldon says his resignation came via correspondence on Thursday. But just the day before, on Wednesday, the sheriff issued a news release saying the sheriff's office ended its employment relationship with Fortney earlier this week. We've been unable to get any additional information from the sheriff or Fortney.
