The defending OCC champion Tygers got a late start to the basketball season after several players participated on the school's regional semi- finalist football team. The veteran squad just began organized practice last Monday, but players say they're happy with how preparation has gone.

"We look pretty good." Says senior forward Marquez Cobb. "Obviously we always want to improve, wanna become a better team, but we look pretty good right now."

"It went very well." Junior guard Asante Wilder says of the team's first week of practice. "We had everybody who came in and went hard all week and just focused on the gameplan for this week."

Because of the school's playoff run on the gridiron, the team had to reschedule their opener, slated for last Friday, for a later date on the Tygers calender. The change in schedule will now have Mansfield Senior opening with bitter cross-town rival Madison, less than two weeks after the start of practice, but Cobb and Wilder like the challenge.

"We are very estatic for that game." Cobb says. "A cross-town rival. A lot of expectations. A lot of intensity. A lot of excitement. It's just really big."

"It's a challenge for us to see where we're at and see how good we're gonna play as a team." Says Wilder. "Against a rival opponent in a big game we just gotta go out there and do what we do."

After their date with the Rams, who lost on a last second shot in their opener at Shelby last Friday, the Tygers will host Toledo Scott (1-1) on Saturday. Cobb says the senior-laden squad is about "80 to 90-percent" of the way to where they want to be right now, adding that they'll find out exactly where they are after this weekend. Wilder agrees that the team isn't where it wants to be just yet, but says that he and the rest of the football players are "getting close" to being in basketball shape.

The Mansfield Senior vs Madison contest will be the WMFD Game of the Week, with LIVE coverage beginning around 7:30 p.m.
