Winter is an excellent season to see native wildlife, birds and majestic trees while hiking.

The ninth annual Mohican Winter Hike will offer hikers the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

The hike will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. at Mohican State Park. The event is free and open to the public.

The hike begins at the commissary, which is located at the park’s Class A campground, just outside Loudonville on Ohio 3 in Ashland County.

Two general hikes - a 5K and a longer 10K hike are planned. Trails run from moderate to difficult.

Hikes, led by volunteers from the Mohican Trails Club, will begin and end at the commissary.

There will also be a half mile Kids Hike starting at 10 a.m.

There will be activities for children including a naturalist led hike along Song Bird Trail.

Warm fire, hot soup, cookies and drinks will be provided after the hike.
