The Niabos Art Gallery is hosting an exhibit themed after self-portraits after Oxford Dictionary named "selfie" as word of the year for 2013. The selfie exhibit is the gallery's fourth show since opening in August of 2013.

"We found that in Mansfield, we have an amazing group of talented artists who are constantly trying to find new venues to exhibit their work," said Violeta Chinni, owner and executive director of Niabos. "We wanted to focus specifically on artwork by local and regional artists. We're only open three hours per week, but we thought that in those 180 minutes per week we can actually give those artists another place to displace their work."

"The different mediums make it a very balanced show," says Aurelio Diaz, the gallery's creative coordinator. "You have all areas covered: paint, video, photography, sculpture... everything." Diaz also participated in the gallery's exhibit by submitting some of his own artwork. For him, he says the experience is very satisfying as an artist, as you view all different styles and ideas. "I think having art displayed among different artists who you do and don't know, it inspires you artistically."

Chinni was overjoyed by the support she's received from the community. For her, opening the gallery was much more personal than just helping out some friends. She dedicated the gallery as a tribute to her father, who taught her everything she knows about art. "He had to actually give up his artwork in order to support his family," she explains. The impact her father's art had on her was tremendous, and she made it her passion to give back to the art community. 35 years later, she's able to lend a hand to artists in Ohio by giving them another outlet to display their work.
