There's an emerging condition found in younger people that leaves many of them in constant pain and barely able to walk. It's called hip impingement, and it's being diagnosed in younger athletes like baseball's Alex Rodriguez, and even in performers like singer Lady Gaga. Surgeries for this type of injury have doubled in the last five years, and the numbers keep going up. With more on what's causing the problem and how doctors are addressing it, here's Clark Powell. During surgery, doctors smooth down the jagged edges of the ball and socket joint to help eliminate the pain. Hip impingement, also known as F-A-I, is a relatively new diagnosis. Experts say it has only been consistently diagnosed in the last decade or so. If you have chronic hip pain from exercise, or even from crossing your legs or sitting in your car for too long, you might want to speak with your doctor about this condition. If it's diagnosed early, you may be able to avoid surgery.
