The first citizen action meeting of the year was held at the NECIC Wednesday night. Guest speaker Samantha Peko shared information and her concerns about the proposed "Stand Your Ground" law in Ohio.

"Right now i'm trying to raise awareness about the 'Stand Your Ground' Law that's being discussed in the Senate. I'm hoping to gain some support and have people write their senators, contact local media, etc. We're hoping to pass a city wide resolution here in Mansfield and maybe move on to Lexington and Ontario"

The "Stand Your Ground" provision would eliminate Ohio's law requiring a person to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense. Essentially, this law says "you have the right to defend yourself or stand your ground anywhere" One wouldn't have to exercise the "Duty to Retreat". Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, came under scrutiny in 2012 during the trial of George Zimmerman for the fatal shooting of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. A jury acquitted Zimmerman of murder and manslaughter charges, saying he acted in self- defense.
