Mount Hermon Baptist Church celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. over the weekend.

Rev.  James E. Cosby, the Program Committee Chairman, says the object of the Sunday service was not to worship Dr. King, but to pay tribute to his achievements.

"It's to celebrate a great man," Cosby said. "Not to make a god out of this man, but just to try to show the world he was a beloved man because he showed love, and he gave love to all mankind."

The service also featured guest speaker Dr.  Rev. Larry Rawls of Mount Sinai Baptist Church.

The Mansfield Interdenominational Minsterial Alliance hosted the program. The group recognized several community members at the celebration.

Deanna West-Torrence, executive director of the North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC), received the humanitarian award for work in the community.

Rev. James Cosby received the presidents award for a lifetime of service to ministry and the community.

The celebration concluded with the community choir and congregation singing "We Shall Overcome."
