A fire broke out Friday night at the S.T.O.P. (Stop The Overpopulation of Pets) cat shelter on Lexington Avenue.

Mark Sieving, Mansfield Fire Department Assistant Chief, reported that the fire is believed to have started in a basement. After firefighters made entry, the fire was quickly contained. No injuries were sustained to firefighters. Firefighters were able to rescue most of the shelter's cats, but an unknown number of cats were lost in the fire.
