The latest Richland County United Way campaign had a towering goal from previous years, up $50,000 from the agencies last ambitious measure.

With the total contribution amount still short of the target goal in the days leading up to the agencies annual awards dinner, Executive Director Bob Maxey says he began to feel some trepidation about reaching the lofty amount.

"There was a point quite frankly where I was a little concerned whether or not we were going to be able to make it." Maxey says. "But we did successfully reach our $1,600,000 goal."

It was the third campaign in a row that the goal was increased according to Maxey, up $100,000 over the last three years. He believes that "says a lot about the make up of the people that live here."

For a second consecutive year Century Link was the top contributor to the campaign with over $130,000 in donations, with the top 25 companies combining to raise just under $950,000.
