The Ashland Post of the State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that occurred early Tuesday morning in the northern part of Ashland County.

Shane Vanmeter, 27, of West Salem, was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner's Office.

The accident occurred at 3:08 a.m. when the Ashland Police Department called out a vehicle pursuit that resulted from a traffic violation. The pursuit was initiated by police in downtown and continued from U.S. 250 eastbound onto Ohio 89 northbound. The Ashland County Sheriff's Office assisted in the pursuit.

According to the patrol Vanmeter was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro, northbound on Ohio 89 north of County Road 620.

"Vanmeter went off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. He was partially ejected from the vehicle, which became engulfed in flames," Lt. Raymond Durant said.

Vanmeter was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

Polk Jackson Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.

Ohio 89 between County Road 620 and Ohio 58 was closed for three hours.
