Richland County's 911 calling center is undergoing three improvement projects.

The commissioners approved contracts with CenturyLink Tuesday for the biggest one. $215,000 will be spent from money set aside in the budget.

911 Director Lisa Burdine says this upgrade will also make the calling center ready for future technological advances. A previously-approved $73,000 purchase of new radios is also in the works.

The third improvement involves the purchase of new furniture for the dispatching center, at $58,000. All of the money comes from the 911 surcharge on cell phone bills, which has been saved-up for eight years.
