Original Published: 3/27/2014The Ashland University football team is going through springs drills at Jack Miller Stadium/Fred Martinelli Field under 11th year head coach Lee Owens. Spring practice will finish up on Friday, April 11th with the Purple and Gold scrimmage which will kickoff at 7pm. Owens brings back experience at quarterback with the return of sophomores to be Austin Bruns and Tra'Von Chapman. The Eagles are also deep at running back returning Anthony Taylor(1691 yards, 14 TD's) and Jordan McCune, who is coming back from a serious ankle injury which he suffered in week one. In 2012, McCune was one of the main cogs in the AU running game rushing for 928 yards and 14 touchdowns as AU finished the regular season at 11-0. The coach also commented the team should be strong at wide receiver, but a little thin at tight end. On defense, the team will be looking to fill the hole left by the graduation of All-American defensive lineman Jamie Meder, a projected NFL draft pick. More than anything else, Owens says spring drills are a time for fundamentals and repetition. The Ashland U. will be looking to improve on last season's 5-5 finish.
