April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to bring attention to child abuse and neglect, and how to spot it and report it.

Richland County Children Services Director Patty Harrelson met with the county commissioners Thursday morning to discuss how parents can neglect their children without meaning to.

Harrelson says Children Services' goal is not to remove children from their homes and put them in foster care, but to help their parents better support them.

Children Services will hold a dedication ceremony at 8:30 Friday morning for its annual Pinwheels for Prevention display outside the Mansfield Area Y on Lexington Avenue.

Each of the 2,391 pinwheels represents an investigation into possible abuse or neglect last year. Because of the rain, the ceremony will be in  the agency's Gerald Futty Room.
