Graduation Day is approaching for many colleges and universities. And nothing goes hand-in-hand with the cap and gown quite like the perfect commencement address. Over the years, some of the most memorable have been given by politicians, celebrities, and other newsmakers. Here's a roundup on who is making the rounds at college graduations across the nation this year and what makes a truly memorable speech. It's the last lesson for graduates and an annual stop for the accomplished. "I, a cable talk show host, has been chosen to stand here and impart wisdom," offered late night TV host Conan O'Brien. The commencement address, each spring drawing an eclectic mix of speakers. This season's circuit is no exception. There are the celebrities. Actor Ed Helms from "The Office" will speak at Cornell University; Sean Combs at Howard University; John Legend at the University of Pennsylvania. The politicos. President Obama, Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton. And the unconventionals. Bill Nye "The Science Guy"; the director of "Frozen," Jennifer Lee; and chef Jose Andres. Some use tough talk. "One of the things that all of you have learned over the last four years is that there's no longer any room for excuses," said President Obama. Others, humor. "I graduated from the University of Life," says actor and comedian Will Ferrell. "Congratulations to all you graduates. As we say in the wetlands ribbit ribbit - neep - ribbit," says Kermit the frog. All aim to inspire. "If you are offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask what seat, just get on," says Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook CEO. "The only way to do great work is to love what you do," says Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO. "If you haven't found it yet, keep looking and don't settle." Speechwriter Paul Begala's recipe for a winning commencement speech, be funny, be self-deprecating, be insightful, and... "Actually the most important thing in a commencement speech is to be brief, be brief," says Begala. So keep it short speakers. Conclude, don't commence.
