Courthouse Security Checkpoint Starts Operating

The new security checkpoint at the front entrance of the Richland County Courthouse started operating Thursday. Retired sheriff's deputies are checking visitors for weapons as their possessions are X- Rayed and they pass through a metal detector. It's going smoothly as Richland becomes the last county in Ohio to have such security at its administration building. The checkpoint is intended to prevent any emotionally- charged situations from escalating into violence with the use of weapons. The start-up cost for construction, equipment, and staffing was $140,000. The operating cost will be $65,000 a year, with each county office contributing to the expense.
