Kidnapping suspect arrested

A South Carolina man is behind bars after leading local authorities on a high speed chase over the weekend.

Charly Ray Ledbetter, 25, was were arrested Sunday afternoon on several charges, including kidnapping in connection with an incident involving the kidnapping of a 2-year-old boy on Saturday. The boy was found unharmed in an apartment and returned to his mother.

Three other occupants in the vehicle were also taken into custody on theft related charges.

A Mansfield police officer responded to a report Sunday of a theft in progress at Walmart, 2485 Possum Run Rd. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle as it left the business. A high-speed chase began northbound on Ohio 13 north onto West Cook Road. The chase ended a short time later in the area of 205 West Cook Road when Ledbetter pulled over.

A small amount of suspected drugs and numerous drug paraphernailia items were found inside the vehicle. Ledbetter was found to have four bags of suspected synthetic drugs on him. The dugs were submitted to the crime lab for testing before charges are filed.

Ledbetter was charged with kidnapping, complicity of theft for the Walmart incident and felony fleeing and eluding. Additional charges may be pending upon further review of the case by the Richland County Prosecutor's Office.

Ledbetter's girlfriend, Deana Hebert, 24, was also arrested. Authorities say on Saturday a woman reported that Ledbetter and Hebert asked to take her child out to eat. After leaving with the child, Ledbetter allegedly sent a text message to the mother demanding money or cold medicine.

Mansfield Police responded to the complaint in the 300 block of Boston Avenue. Police spoke with the grandmother of the boy. She told them that a meth lab was inside the home. Authorities evacuated the home and found several items used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Police tracked the couple to an apartment complex on Koogle Road. The boy was found safe inside the apartment. Hebert was arrested on an outstanding warrant and felony charge of kidnapping.
