Emergency responders from Richland, Ashland, and Crawford Counties prepare themselves for a disaster, by participating Wednesday in a tabletop exercise offered by Richland County's Local Emergency Planning Committee. Representatives from area police and fire departments, sheriff's offices, highway patrol, health department, and hospitals were among those discussing how to respond to an anthrax scare in the mailroom at the 179th Airlift Wing, aggravated by a severe thunderstorm, a plane crash, and a fuel spill. Evaluators grade the participants on how they handle the mock disaster, and offer suggestions for improving the response. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency requires local officials to conduct these exercises once a year on a four-year cycle, starting with a tabletop drill then more realistic scenarios in following years.
