Monday, President Obama will award the matron's highest military honor to a soldier who risked his life to save fellow troops in Afghanistan. In the early morning hours of July 13, 2008, Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Pitts and his unit were attacked by about 200 Taliban insurgents. After surviving a grenade explosion, Sergeant Pitts crawled to a forward position and tossed back short-fuse grenades at the enemy. Unable to stand due to leg injuries, Pitts grabbed a machine gun and fired blindly over a wall. He radioed for help, but none came, and he continued the fight, alone. Believing he would not survive, Sergeant Pitts then used a grenade launcher to take out as many Taliban as he could. By the time reinforcements arrived to rescue him. Pitts was nearly dead, but as you can see, he survived and is now a proud father. The Pentagon says Pitts displayed incredible courage and valor in the battle that claimed the lives of nine American soldiers.
