Immigration Legislation Uncertain Before Congress Recesses

Prospects don't look good for Congress to pass an immigration deal before the summer recess. Tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central America have created a huge backlog in immigration courts. Legislation to deal with the influx of illegal border crossings hasn't gotten very far. Republican Congressional leaders complain the president won't engage them and the top Senate Democrat dismisses their proposals as "crazy." Many conservatives in the House oppose the president's $3.7-billion funding request as too expensive. Democrats in the House support the cash but are against changes to the border policy House Republicans plan to add to the legislation.
