With more than a thousand people killed in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting early today and announced strong support for an immediate cease fire in Gaza. Here's the latest from U.N. headquarters in New York. It didn't take long after the security council statement on the Middle East was read shortly after midnight, that the Palestinians and Israel had their objections. The Palestinians have been longing for a more forceful resolution, which would include wording that called on Israel to withdraw from Gaza. "They should have adopted a resolution a long time ago to condemn this aggression, and to call for this aggression to be stopped immediately, to provide the Palestinian people with protection, and to lift the seige against our people in the Gaza Strip, including depriving our people in the Gaza Strip from fishing in the sea, which is one of the main sources of providing them with food," says Riyad Monsour, permanent observer of Palestine to the United Nations. The Palestinian observer again raised the idea of some form of international protection for the people of Gaza. He asked all those who had ideas or thoughts on this to please contribute them. Israel's ambassador said he didn't want to talk, really, to the press of the security council. His message, he said, was aimed at the citizens of the world. He said they should really learn where the rockets that are headed for Israel really come from. "Make no mistake, Hamas is not working alone,it is funded by Qatar and Iran," says Ron Prosor, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations. "Every rocket flying out of Gaza could bear the imprint 'Courtesy of Tehran' while every terror tunnel could have a sign that reads 'Made possible through a kind donation from the Emir of Qatar.'" The security council statement, again, including that call for a humanitarian cease fire, a call that's been ignored, no matter who seems to propose it.
