A fallen Ashland County sheriff's deputy is forever remembered with two new signs on Claremont Avenue in Ashland. The memorial to Detective Sergeant Glenn Sturgill was unveiled today during a ceremony at the scene of the crime that led to him being shot and killed, on August second 1982, his 30th birthday. Sturgill saw three men use a shotgun in a robbery attempt at the Fisher Big Wheel store, then followed them as they fled across the street into a cornfield behind McDonald's. He arrested one of the men, but another was hiding and shot Sturgill, killing him instantly. Sheriff's Captain Terry Hamilton worked for several years to create the memorial. Sturgill's widow, children, and siblings are glad he's being honored, after enduring such a tragedy. And the Ashland County Sheriff at the time, Kenneth Etzwiler, says Sturgill will be remembered as a fine man and law enforcement professional. Two men involved in the shooting continue serving life sentences. When they're eligible for parole, the Sturgill family collects thousands of signatures on petitions, urging the parole board to keep them behind bars.
