Obama Sends Letter To Congress On Iraq Airstrikes

President Barack Obama sent a letter to Congress Monday, notifying them he authorized this weekend's U.S. military strikes in northern Iraq, in support of an operation to deliver humanitarian assistance to people in the town of Amirli. In the letter sent under the War Powers Resolution, President Obama says the actions were taken "in coordination with, and at the request, of the Iraqi Government." The War Powers Resolution is a federal law which requires the president to consult with Congress before putting U.S. armed forces into hostilities. The aid of U.S. airstrkes helped Iraqi security and volunteer forces reclaim Amirli, which hand been controlled by ISIS militant fighters since June.
