The Ashland University football team is down one quarterback. As reported Monday in the Ashland Times- Gazette by Sports Editor Doug Haidet, former AU Eagle quarterback Tra'Von Chapman will no longer be playing football at Ashland U. The 6'1" 210-pound transfer from the University of Pittsburgh who started the final six games for the Eagles as a freshman was granted permission to speak with the University of Akron from AU head coach Lee Owens.

According to the report, Chapman wanted a full scholarship and also wanted a Pell check to use as money for expenses. Owens stated those things were not possible at the Division II level. Owens also added that AU did everything that they could do, but Chapman changed in terms of what he thought he needed to stay. Chapman played at Kent Roosevelt High School where his coach John Nemec now works as director of player personnel at Akron University.

This past season, Chapman went 90 of 173 for 1,154 yards and nine touchdowns to go along with three interceptions and was projected to be the starting quarterback for the 2014 season heading into summer camp. As it stands now the starter could be sophomore Austin Bruns from Coldwater, who started week one in 2013, or red shirt freshman from North Royalton Travis Tarnowski. Since the graduation of All-American quarterbacks Billy Cundiff (2010) and Taylor Housewright (2013), the Eagles will be looking at their fourth starter at quarterback over the past 12 games.
