June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. And because nature can be unpredictable, we know once a major storm hits, anything can happen. So you need to be prepared, even if you don't live on the coast. What's the best way to ride out a hurricane? We find out in today's Health Minute. Hurricanes can be destructive and dangerous. High winds and high waters are a recipe for disaster. So what's the best way to handle them? Federal authorities say have a plan. Fir instance, stock up on emergency supplies for your car or home, including batteries, canned food, flashlights and a battery-powered radio. Have emergency numbers ready and program them into your cell phone. Have a fire extinguish3er ready and make sure everyone in your home knows how to use it. If you are in a hurricane prone area, know where your nearest shelter is, and also know different ways to get out of your neighborhood and to safety And remember, hurricane damage is not confined to coastal areas. They can cause heavy rains, flooding and knock out power lines well inland. So try to get our plan ready, just in case.
