People in Waukesha, Wisconsin are still trying to make sense of that disturbing stabbing attack last weekend involving three young girls.

Police say two 12-year-olds lured another 12-year-old into a wooded area and stabbed her 19 times. The crime has had a devistating impact on the community.

The mug shots of 12-year-olds Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier depict the picture of innocence but their actions, say authorities, are beyond belief. The 911 tapes reveal the horror of their actions, luring their 12-year-old friend into the woods, police say, stabbing her 19 times, and leaving her for dead.

CALLER: "She says she's having trouble breathing. She said she was stabbed multiple times."

911 OPERATOR: "Is she awake?"

CALLER: "She's awake."

911 OPERATOR: "Is she breathing?"

CALLER: "Yeah she's breathing, she says she can take shallow breaths. She's alert."

The plan, the attack, the motive, all to please the fictitious horror character, Slenderman, created in 2009 in an online contest. The character, who preys on children, has taken on a life of its own, online, with thousands of pictures, videos and stories posted online. A virtual world those obsessed with the macabre can access.

The older brother of suspect, Anissa Weier, tells The Daily Mail news site that "she loved the Slenderman stories, just anything a bit creepy. But I don't see why it changed from dream to reality."

"What effect does this have on students in general?" asks CNN reporter Miguel Marquez. "I think students and parents, there's a certain amount of fear. Are things gonna be okay? are students safe?" asks Todd Gray, Waukesha School District Superintendent. "I can tell you we do have a very safe school."

Gray, who oversees the school, the victim and her alleged perpetrators attended, say some parents have kept their kids home. Other children have sought counseling at school.

Samantha Rodriguez was in the same middle school gym class as Morgan Geyser. "I was kind of scared, too, because you don't really know who to trust anymore, really," says Rodriguez.

The school has, for now, banned the Creepypasta web site, home to the majority of Slenderman stories, from all its computers and Ipads, pending a review. It's also urging parents to monitor what their kids are accessing online and to talk about it.

"As a parent, I just hold my kids a little bit closer," said one parent.

And the good news, if there's any to be had, the victim's condition has been upgraded to fair. She is walking a bit and talking. She appears to be out of danger.

The two suspects are facing charges of intentional first-degree attempted homicide. They appeared in court Monday, where bail was set at $500,000.
