Council Approves Opening Two Pools For The Summer

Mansfield City Council approved opening two pools this year at their meeting Tuesday night.
Liberty Park Pool on Grace Street and Linden Pool off Millsboro Road, will be open from June 16 through Aug. 19.
Mayor Tim Theaker said $65,000 is needed to operate the pools.
Council accepted a $30,000 donation from a private donor through the Richland County Foundation.
"We have verbal commitments from private individuals throughout the community to help open the pools," Theaker said.
"City employees raised $2,700 earilier this year for the pools," Theaker said.
The admission prices this year will be $1.50 for children age 4 through 12 and $2.50 for swimmers age 13 and up. Admission will be free for children through the age of 3.
The pool admission price is expected to generate about $14,000. The city will collect 75 cents from the $1.50 admission and $1 from the $2.50 admission.Council also approved a contract with the Mansfield Area Y to provide lifeguard services.
Theaker said the Y is helping the city meet the new Americans with Disabilities Act regulations for swimming pools. The Y pools are ADA compliant.
The Y will allow anyone with a disability who wants to swim to use the indoor pools at its facility charging the same pool rates at the city.
"It''s great the Y is charging the same rate as the city for people with disabilities to use its pool," Theaker said.
Theaker said the city does have the money to upgrade the outdoor pools to meet the ADA requirements.
"It would cost the city thousands of dollars to upgrade the two pools to meet the ADA requirements. If we did the upgrade we would not have the money to open the pools," Theaker said.

Bomb Scare Turns Out To Be Hoax

A bomb scare Tuesday morning turned out to be a hoax.
Richland County sheriff''s deputies were called at 7 a.m. when a break-in was discovered at Doc''s Computers at 932 Springmill Road in Madison Township.
They arrived to find something frightening sitting in front of the door; four sticks of dynamite wrapped in electrical tape.
The area was cordoned off, and the Ashland County sheriff''s bomb squad was called in. It determined the dynamite was not a threat.
The sticks of dynamite belong to the store''s owner and are kept at the counter as a joke, with a sign calling it a "Computer Repair Kit".
The suspect got away with two laptop computers.
If an arrest is made, charges could include breaking and entering and inducing panic for setting the sticks of dynamite by the front door.
The incident caused traffic to be blocked at Ohio 39 and North Trimble Road, and nearby residents to be evacuated.

The Ohio Highway Patrol''s 2011 Partners For Safety Award was presented Tuesday to the Mid-Ohio School, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Richland Newhope Honors Two Heroes With Heart

Richland Newhope recently presented its Fifth Annual Heroes with Heart Award to two people in Richland County who have made significant differences in the lives of those with a developmental disability.
Seven people were nominated for the honor. The agency''s Devlopmental Disabilities Awareness Month Committee selected the two winners.
The winners were honored at Richland Newhope''s 23rd Annual Recognition Banquet.
The winners are Dana Byrd and Carolyn Peugh.
Byrd was nominated by her daughter, Elizabeth, a junior at Ontario High School, who says ever since she can remember, her mom has been reaching out to those with disabilities.
"It was a huge honor for Elizabeth to nominate me," Dana Byrd said. "You know, as a parent, you always strive to be a good example to your children and so that was absolutely thrilling."
As a child, Dana Byrd began attending Special Olympics activities with her father, who was a volunteer. She later got a degree in special education from Ashland University. Byrd taught for five years before becoming a stay-at-home mom for her four children, who all attended preschool at Richland Newhope''s Early Childhood Center so they could interact with children with disabilities.
Byrd returned to work full-time two years ago. She currently works for the Mansfield City Schools and teaches medically-fragile students in their home.
Her involvement with people with disabilities doesn''t end there. In 2003, she began teaching a Sunday School class for people with disabilities at Berean Baptist Church and hosted Christmas parties at her home.
Last summer, Byrd and her daughters, Elizabeth and Allison, volunteered as short-term missionaries at a Joni and Friends family retreat for children with special needs and their families.
"She has done her best to make them feel loved and important while also teaching my sister, two brothers and myself the importance of treating people with disabilities with the respect and love they deserve," Elizabeth Byrd said.
Peugh has worked with special needs students for 33 years. She began her career as a classroom aide in the Mansfield City Schools where her son, who has cerebral palsy, attended. She did this for eight years until she got her teaching degree. Peugh spent two years in the Loudonville Schools before returning to Mansfield, where she has been ever since.
She was nominated for the award by Joan Collard, a colleague at Mansfield Senior High School.
"Carolyn has been devoted to helping students with disabilities be the best they can be, focusing on them gaining skills that will allow them to be as independent after graduation as possible," Collard said. "She has always put the students'' needs first."
For many years, Peugh has planned and hosted many special events for students with disabilities throughout Richland County. Among them are bingo parties, bowling events, movie nights and a spring prom.
Peugh often remains involved in the lives of her students and their families after graduation. For those without family support, she is also considered the "go to person" during times of emergency or when they need help connecting with services.
Peugh also served 15 years on the board of the Mount Vernon Developmental Center.
The Heroes with Heart award was presented to Peugh as she prepares to retire from teaching.
"It''s a nice way to finish out my career," she said.
Other Heroes with Heart nomineees were: Rhonda and Steve Fuller, owners of Spirit Ohio Sports Academy and sponsor of Sparkles, a special needs cheerleading squad; Cortanee Caugherty and John Caugherty, Special Olympics volunteers; and Becky Romagnoli, MedCentral Hospital/Project SEARCH.
Also at the banquet, support specialist Aurelio Diaz was named 2011 Richland Newhope Employee of the Year.
Sixty-five Richland Newhope employees also were honored for employment milestones of five to 35 years.
Also during the banquet, Richland Newhope recognized four volunteers, members of the Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Richland Newhope Industries, Inc. Board, and the Pediatric Devlopment Center, Inc. Board, and four community members who serve on DD Board committees.
