Fugitive Richard Lawless Captured

A fugitive who has eluded law enforcement for nearly 2 months was captured today, in the Portage Lakes area.

Chief Deputy Carl Richert, of the Ashland County Sheriff's Office says officials received information that Richard Lawless was staying in a home in Portage Lakes, near Akron. He was unarmed at the time and taken into custody without incident.

Lawless was last seen in West Virgina on July 9th, nearly a week after he assaulted a man in Polk, Ohio and evaded arrest.

THE ASHLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WAS NOTIFIED BY THE U.S. MARSHALS, NORTHERN OHIO VIOLENT FUGITIVE TASK FORCE UNIT AT 3:00 P.M. TODAY JULY 17, 2015 THAT RICHARD J. LAWLESS WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT AND WITHOUT ANY INJURIES TO HIM OR OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, THE U.S. MARSHAL’S RECEIVED INFORMATION THAT MR. LAWLESS WAS IN THE PORTAGE LAKES AREA, NEAR AKRON OHIO, SURVEILENCE WAS SET UP ON STATEMILL ROAD IN SUMMIT COUNTY, UNITS OBSERVED RICHARD J. LAWLESS CROSS THE ROAD HEADING TOWARDS A HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. U.S. MARSHALS WAS ABLE TO STOP AND ARREST LAWLESS WITHOUT INCIDENT AND WITHOUT ANY INJURIES TO LAWLESS OR OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT UNITS. LAWLESS WAS UNARMED AT THE POINT OF ARREST. LAWLESS WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE JAIL AND WILL BE HELD AT THIS LOCATION.

 

RICHARD J. LAWLESS HAS BEEN ON THE RUN FOR 52 DAYS AFTER BEING INTERVIEWED BY DEA AND MEDINA COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE AT HIS HOME ON TWP. RD. 902 NEAR POLK, OHIO. IN THE LAST 52 DAYS LAWLESS HAS BEEN TRACKED TO MANY WESTERN AND SOUTHERN STATES, HE HAS BEEN IN WEST VIRGINIA, INDIANA, UTAH, AND SEVERAL OTHER STATES AND HAS ALWAYS RETURNED TO THIS AREA. HE AVOIDED ARREST IN WEST VIRGINIA DURING A TRAFFIC STOP ON JULY 09, 2015, WHERE HIS GIRLFRIEND SARA KRUPANSKY WAS APPREHENDED AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY DURING A TRAFFIC STOP. THE ASHLAND COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE, THE ASHLAND COUNTY PROSECUTORS OFFICE, HAS BEEN WORKING WITH MEDINA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, CLEVELAND DEA OFFICE, THE MEDINA COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE, OHIO BUREAU OF IDENTIFICATION, THE OHIO STATE HIGHWAY PATROL AND THE FBI.

 

A HOUSE THAT LAWLESS HAS BEEN STAYING IN FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS NEAR THE PORTAGE LAKES WILL BE LOCATED AND THE DEA AND MEDINA COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE WILL CONTINUE THAT INVESTIGATION.

RICHERT II OF THE ASHLAND COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE STATED, “THIS TYPE OF CASE IS EXACTLY WHY OUR SHERIFF’S OFFICE PARTNERED UP WITH THE U.S. MARSHALS, WHEN A DANGEROUS FELON GOES ON THE RUN, MEMBERS OF THE TASK FORCE CAN COMBINE RESOURCES TO BRING THIS INDIVIDUAL TO JUSTICE. IN THIS CASE WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE LAWLESS INTO CUSTODY AND WILL BRING HIM BACK TO ASHLAND COUNTY TO FACE FELONY CHARGES AND FACE SENTENCING.”

CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY, MEDINA COUNTY, ARE ON FILE OR WILL BE PRESENTED FOR CHARGES.
