Mansfield, OH- The city of Mansfield's new fire hydrant painting program is in full swing.

The "Plug Hug" fire hydrant cleaning system started today at the fire hydrant located at the corner of Main Street and Park Avenue across from Mechanics Bank.

This new technology will make fire hydrants "paint ready" in two minutes.

Dave Lorenz, Supervisor, of the City of Mansfield Service Complex, says the "Plug Hug" is efficient and makes hydrant painting easier.

"The last time our hydrants were painted was in 2008 and 2009. Using this machine makes stripping the hydrants a lot quicker other than doing it by hand the way we used to," Lorenz said.

"We'll have a three person crew going out doing 10 to 12 hydrants a day stripping and priming the hydrants. The crew will finish by painting the hydrants yellow with white caps," Lorenz said.

Lorenz says they expect to have at least 1,000 hydrants done this summer and will continue the program until all 4,800 hydrants are painted.

Mayor Tim Theaker said the "Plug Hug" painting allows the city to continue its efforts to clean up  and beautify the community.
