Marion OHP Investigating Early Tuesday Morning Fatal Crash

MARION, OH - The Marion Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash early Tuesday. 

The fatal crash occurred at State Route 739 near Campbell Road. Marion Dispatch received a call at 6:35 AM about a crash at the location. After an investigation, troopers were able to establish that the crash occurred at 1:30 AM.

A 2011 Volkswagen was traveling westbound on State Route 739. The driver failed to negotiate a curve, and drove off the left side of the roadway, striking a utility pole, culvert, and tree. 

Brent Whalen, age 23 of Marion, was the driver of the Volkswagen. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. 

Whalen was pronounced deceased at the scene by Dr. Mark Davis, the Marion County Coroner. 

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Marion Township Fire Department and EMS, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, 1st Advanced EMS, and Ed’s Towing.

This crash remains under investigation.
