WAYNE COUNTY, OH - UPDATE - Law enforcement officials are continuing to search for inmate Said Ali El-Khatib who escaped from custody at around 8:58 pm on Friday night.

According to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service, El-Khatib was being transported on a private transport vehicle that was passing through Wayne County on its way to Indiana.  When the vehicle stopped at a rest area on I-71 near the 198-mile marker, the prisoner, 33-year-old Said El-Khatib, seized an opportunity to escape custody and ran into the woods near the highway.

El-Khatib was being transported from New York to Indiana after a larceny arrest.  He also has a warrant from the Ashland Police Department for larceny and has been wanted since 2014.

El-Khatib is 6'1" and weighs 165 lbs.  He was last seen wearing tan pants and a tan shirt with no writing.

In a press release, The U. S. Marshals Service advises the public to be extra cautious:

Anyone with information regarding the whereablouts of a known fugitive is encouraged to contact the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force at: 1-866-4-WANTED or text the keyword WANTED and the tip to TIP411 (847411) or call the Ohio State Highway Patrol Wayne County Post at 330-264-0575.
