ASHLAND, OH- Ashland Elks Lodge 1360 held their 99th annual Flag Day Ceremony under clear skies in Brookside Park on Saturday afternoon.

The ceremony gave the history of the United States flags and honored local businesses that fly the flag with pride.  Exalted Ruler of the Ashland Elks Lodge 1360, Tom Mansperger said that the ceremony is just one way that the Elks show their patriotism.

The National Elks organization was instrumental in the creation of flag day according to Mansperger.

"We're a very patriotic organization, so they would show the flag, but felt that there needed to be something done on a yearly basis to honor the flag," Mansperger said.

The Elks Lodge gave out awards to local businesses and organizations including Downtown Ashland and the Ashland Area YMCA to recognize their dedication to flying the flag with honor.

"I think it was a nice opportunity to bring to light that it is important that businesses support their country and are patriotic and display the flag correctly," Mansperger said.

Ashland does a good job of showing it's American pride according to Mansperger.  "If you go downtown, there's flags up on every pole," Mansperger said.
